Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls, as well as send instant messages, share screens, and exchange files. In the past couple of years it has become one of the most popular programs for communication across computers or mobile devices.

After Skype was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for over $8 billion, they announced that the service was hosting more than 32 million users at the same time. Since this was a new milestone for Skype it was impressive that the servers could handle that type of workload. It seems like they were well prepared.

How is skype holding up today?

A lot has happened since 2011. With new services like Discord, Microsoft teams and Zoom popping up left and right, how is Skype holding up? During 2020 Skype actually had around 40 million daily users. However, Microsoft has officially announced a date for ending their service Skype for Business, effective July 31 2021. Organizations using Skype will have to move on to Teams for communications.
